Thousands of pets being abandoned in Dubai as expat owners flee over Iran war

Thousands of pets are being abandoned in Dubai as expat owners evacuate due to the ongoing Iran war, with animal charities highlighting their plight.

Amid the escalating Iran war, thousands of pets are being abandoned in Dubai by expatriate owners who are fleeing the region. Animal charities, including the RSPCA, have raised concerns about the fate of pets left behind as their owners prioritize escape. The urgency of the situation has intensified following the UK government's recent emergency evacuation flights, which have already facilitated the departure of around 45,000 British nationals from the Middle East since March 1.

Hannah Mainds, chief executive of the RSPCA Blackpool and north Lancashire branch, has voiced her concerns, highlighting her past experience in Dubai where she witnessed the heartbreaking reality of pets abandoned without their families. Many of these animals were microchipped and appeared to be well cared for, underscoring the trauma faced by both pets and rescuers as they confront the emotional toll of abandonment during a crisis.

With the rapid evacuation of expatriates, animal welfare groups fear that pets are becoming the 'hidden victims' of the conflict. The abandonment of these animals poses not only an ethical dilemma but also raises public health concerns as stray populations could increase. The situation calls for immediate attention and action to prevent further suffering for these vulnerable animals left behind in the wake of human emergencies.
