Demolition of Vjesnik Skyscraper Delayed, Asbestos Found
The demolition of the Vjesnik skyscraper in Croatia has been delayed due to the discovery of asbestos.
During a press conference, Croatia's State Secretary Tonči Glavinić announced that asbestos has been found on the upper floors of the Vjesnik skyscraper, leading to a postponement in the planned demolition work. While the exact method of demolition has yet to be determined, measures are currently being taken to remove all windows and glass facades from the burned structure. Additionally, one of its defining features, the large Vjesnik sign at the top of the building, is set to be removed today.
The ongoing cleanup of the skyscraper involves clearing out waste from up to the 15th floor, with a crane installed on the side of Slavonska Street to facilitate the removal of debris using a container. State Secretary Glavinić emphasized that preparations to protect the adjacent underpass are also underway, with a container measuring 60 meters in length and 3 meters in height being deployed to safeguard the area during the demolition process.
Recent tests on the building's rebar and concrete have been concluded, following investigative actions requested by the project's designer. The presence of asbestos complicates the demolition timeline, highlighting the need for careful planning to ensure safety during the process.
