On April 25, there is Shabbat. But the ANPI does not advance the torchlight procession
The Jewish Community of Turin will not participate in this year's traditional torchlight procession on April 24, which coincides with the beginning of Shabbat.
The Jewish Community of Turin announced that it will not take part in the annual torchlight procession held on the evening of April 24, due to the event clashing with the beginning of Shabbat, a significant day of rest and prayer in Judaism. This has raised concerns as the procession, which commemorates the Italian Liberation, traditionally sees participation from various groups to honor the significance of the day.
In an effort to address this scheduling conflict, a proposal was made to move the event to April 23, thereby allowing representatives of the Jewish community to partake in the celebrations. The City of Turin had expressed willingness to consider this exceptional shift in date, indicating a responsive approach to inclusivity in the commemorative events.
However, when the suggestion was formally discussed during the organizational meeting for the celebrations, the ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans) and associated partisan associations rejected the idea, arguing that the Liberation Day is a secular celebration that should not be influenced by religious observances. Consequently, the torchlight procession will proceed as scheduled on April 24, which has led to disappointment within the Jewish community that has played a historical role in the commemoration of Italy's liberation.
