Liberal S. Kairys Will Again Propose Exempting Manor Owners from Property Tax
S. Kairys proposes a tax exemption for heritage site managers and owners engaged in cultural activities.
S. Kairys, Deputy Chairman of the Liberal Movement faction in the Lithuanian Parliament, plans to propose a tax exemption for owners and managers of heritage sites who engage in cultural activities and have public access to these sites. The proposal aims to support both private and legal entities that have entered into a preservation agreement with the Department of Cultural Heritage. According to Kairys, the intent is to create a safeguard that encourages the restoration and management of these heritage properties.
Kairys argues that the exemption would not simply benefit wealthy manor owners, as is sometimes criticized, but rather those actively working to maintain and open these sites to the public. He emphasized that access to the properties is a crucial part of this proposal, stating that those who are merely acquiring such properties without a clear purpose should not benefit from the tax exemption. This perspective addresses concerns about the potential misuse of such tax incentives.
This proposal reflects a growing trend in Lithuania to prioritize cultural heritage and public engagement with historical sites. By offering tax relief to those who demonstrate a commitment to cultural activities and public accessibility, Kairys hopes to foster a greater appreciation for Lithuania's heritage. If successful, this initiative could lead to more resources dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history of the country.
