"There is a good chance that the road conditions will deteriorate"
Severe weather is expected to impact road conditions in northwest Iceland, leading to potential hazards beginning tomorrow.
Forecasters predict that severe weather will hit northwest Iceland starting tomorrow, likely causing road conditions to deteriorate. Warnings have already been issued for a northern snowstorm affecting Breiðafjörður, the Westfjords, the Strandir region, and northwest Iceland, lasting into Friday. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin) indicates that conditions will worsen, particularly on mountain passes, by late tomorrow as snow and blizzards are anticipated in the region.
Wind speeds might reach up to twenty meters per second in Breiðafjörður and the Westfjords, significantly increasing the risk of dangerous driving conditions. The first yellow warning will be in effect in the Westfjords starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow, with similar alerts expected to follow shortly for Breiðafjörður and northwest Norway. The alert for Breiðafjörður will remain in place until three a.m. on Friday, while warnings for the Westfjords and northwest will persist through tomorrow.
As of now, road conditions are already reported to be difficult in various higher-altitude areas across northern Iceland. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration warns drivers to be cautious and prepared for blind conditions caused by falling snow, emphasizing the need for vigilance while driving in these adverse weather conditions that are expected to worsen soon.
