Good news: Wilma Murto included in the World Championship team
Wilma Murto, a pole vault star, has been named to represent Finland in the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Poland.
The Finnish Athletics Federation has announced the selection of eight athletes for the upcoming World Indoor Championships to be held in Poland next week. Among the noteworthy inclusions is Wilma Murto, a celebrated pole vaulter who faced significant injuries in the previous season. After a lengthy recovery, she recently competed for the first time just about a month ago, which adds to the excitement surrounding her participation. Her performance last Sunday, where she placed third at a pole vault competition in Loughborough, UK, marks a promising return to form.
However, the overall team composition reflects some concerns, particularly as Finland will not have any representatives in the women's sprint hurdles category. Athlete Reetta Hurske has indicated that she cannot fully prepare for the championships, while fellow competitor Nooralotta Neziri is reportedly still injured. Other athletes who have achieved the qualifying standards, such as Lotta Harala and Saara Keskitalo, will also be absent from the competition. Additionally, Saga Vanninen has opted out of the championships, further reducing the size of the Finnish team.
The World Indoor Championships will take place in Toruń, Poland, from March 20 to 22, featuring a limited squad from Finland. The athletes representing the country include Riku Illukka in the men's 60m and Santeri Kuusiniemi and Elmo Lakka in the men's 60m hurdles. Despite the absence of some key competitors, the inclusion of Murto is seen as a significant boost for Team Finland as they aim to make an impact at the championships.
