Over 8,000 Ukrainians brought back from Russian captivity in four years of war
In the four years since the onset of full-scale war with Russia, Ukraine has successfully secured the release of over 8,000 of its citizens from captivity through numerous exchange operations.
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion four years ago, Ukraine has successfully facilitated the return of 8,050 individuals who were held captive by Russian forces. This achievement has been realized through more than 70 prisoner exchange operations, reflecting Ukraine's ongoing commitment to the welfare and safety of its citizens. The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War has been at the forefront of these efforts, highlighting the organized and strategic approach taken by the Ukrainian government in handling prisoner exchanges.
While this milestone is noteworthy, officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have emphasized that the situation remains dire, with approximately 7,000 Ukrainian prisoners still believed to be in Russian captivity. The need for continued efforts in negotiations and exchanges is paramount, as the Ukrainian government acknowledges both the physical and emotional toll on families awaiting the return of their loved ones. Zelenskyyβs previous statements underline a commitment to not only secure the return of prisoners but also to monitor and advocate for their conditions while in captivity.
Looking forward, the Coordination Headquarters stresses that there is still substantial work remaining to be done in the realm of prisoner exchanges. They have acknowledged the often unseen challenges faced in this delicate process, emphasizing resilience and determination. The slogan 'Together for return' encapsulates their ethos, reinforcing a message of collective effort and unyielding resolve in the face of adversity, with hopes that all captives may one day return safely to their homeland.
