More than 15 families leave homes near dam at risk of collapse in Piauí

Eighteen families in the Barra do Campestre community have voluntarily evacuated their homes due to an imminent risk of dam collapse, as advised by the Civil Defense of Piauí.

In a proactive move, 18 families from the Barra do Campestre community in Coronel José Dias, Piauí, have agreed to leave their homes following warnings from the state's Civil Defense regarding the imminent risk of the Campestre Dam's main wall collapsing. The families received guidance from Civil Defense officials along with engineers conducting inspections on the dam's condition, emphasizing the importance of safety in light of the situation. The director of Prevention and Mitigation for Civil Defense, Werton Costa, indicated that although immediate danger to residents is currently not present, the focus remains on preserving their properties and ensuring that water flow from the dam is managed properly. This approach aims to mitigate potential hazards while prioritizing the rehabilitation of the compromised reservoir. The significant attention given to the dam's integrity highlights broader concerns about the safety of such infrastructures in Brazil, especially in regions prone to heavy rains and flooding. The situation continues to evolve, with authorities monitoring the dam closely and prioritizing community safety as they work towards resolving the risks associated with the dam.
