A Child Learns Words Best by Singing, Says Katri Kunnas, Founder of Kielinuppu

Katri Kunnas emphasizes the effectiveness of songs in teaching Finnish language to children through her project Kielinuppu.

Katri Kunnas, along with her colleague Sarah Goncalves, initiated the Kielinuppu project nine years ago, aiming to create teaching tools for professionals working with children learning Finnish. Their innovative approach utilizes songs to engage young learners, helping them acquire vocabulary through repetition and simple melodies. One of their key contributions is the 'Weekday Soup' song, which is designed to teach children the names of the days of the week, proving to be popular not just among multilingual families but among many children learning Finnish.

Kunnas has established a well-equipped studio in Turku, where they have expanded from initial modest resources to a more developed program that includes various songs and language-learning tools. These songs are not only effective in classrooms but have also made their way into the homes of families, as children enjoy singing these catchy tunes that enhance their language skills. The songs typically contain around 20 words each, focusing on repetition to ensure the learners can easily remember and use the new vocabulary.

Through the Kielinuppu project, Kunnas and her team are making a significant impact by innovatively addressing the challenges of language acquisition for Finnish learners. Their methodology reflects a playful yet educational framework, where learning the Finnish language can seamlessly blend with fun cultural expressions such as singing, making the process engaging for children and effective in teaching foundational vocabulary and concepts.
