Civil Aviation Authority: Significant improvements in the reorganizing terminal area of Athens airport
The Greek Civil Aviation Authority and Germany's DFS conducted real-time simulations for the new terminal area at Athens International Airport to enhance air traffic management and performance-based navigation procedures.
The Greek Civil Aviation Authority (ΥΠΑ) has made significant strides in improving the terminal area of Athens International Airport, known as "Eleftherios Venizelos." As part of a collaborative effort with Germany's DFS, the first and second phases of real-time simulations took place in Munich between November 18-21, 2025, and from February 23 to March 6, 2026. These simulations aimed at assessing and refining the proposed reorganization and zoning of the airspace, ensuring that new navigation procedures adhere to performance-based navigation (PBN) standards.
The primary objective of these simulations was to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed changes and their impact on air traffic management. By successfully simulating new PBN procedures specific to the terminal area, the project aims to facilitate more efficient navigation and operations at the airport. Additionally, in the second phase of the exercise, 14 instructors from the Civil Aviation Authority were trained on the simulator, enhancing their skills in managing the updated air traffic protocols.
These developments are crucial for the ongoing modernization of Athens airport, which is a significant hub in Greece and serves millions of travelers each year. The collaboration between Greek and German authorities signifies a strong bilateral relation and an emphasis on improving air travel safety and efficacy through the adoption of advanced airspace management strategies. Given the importance of Athens as a gateway to Europe, the successful implementation of these improvements will not only enhance operational efficiency but also contribute to the overall growth of the aviation sector in the region.
