Pliening: Retiree presents 50,000 euros to phone fraudsters in front of his house
A retired man in Pliening was deceived by fraudsters posing as police and lost 50,000 euros.
In Pliening, a senior citizen fell victim to a phone scam on Tuesday, losing a hefty sum of 50,000 euros. The fraudsters used the 'fake police officer' trick, where a caller impersonating a police officer informed the elderly man that criminals had committed a robbery and required his assistance. To help catch the perpetrators, he was instructed to place all his cash outside in a pot, claiming that officers would arrive to apprehend the criminals.
Following the instructions, the retiree complied and put the money outside his door. It was only around ten o'clock, after noticing that the pot was gone, that the retiree realized he had been duped and promptly contacted the police. The real authorities from the Upper Bavaria Nord Police Headquarters reported this incident and have taken over the investigation, underscoring the need for the public to remain skeptical of unsolicited calls from strangers.
The police also stressed that they will never ask for cash, bank transfers, or other payments over the phone, urging individuals to be vigilant against such scams. This incident serves as a reminder of the increasing sophistication of fraudsters targeting vulnerable populations, specifically the elderly, and highlights the critical need for awareness and preventive measures within the community.
