"Skin, Muscle, Sweat Carry Emotions"... Sharon Eyal's 'Jackie' Premieres in Korea

Sharon Eyal's contemporary dance piece 'Jackie' makes its domestic premiere in Korea, showcasing extreme physical expression and the fragility and strength of human beings.

Sharon Eyal, recognized as one of the most innovative figures in contemporary dance, premieres her work 'Jackie' in Korea, marking a significant event for the Seoul City Dance Company in its third year. The premiere is part of the company’s first production of the season, which also includes a double bill showcasing 'Bliss,' highly acclaimed during its Asian premiere last year. 'Jackie' focuses on extreme bodily expressions, highlighting both the vulnerabilities and strengths of humanity, and was first introduced by the Dutch Dance Theater in 2023.

Eyal has traveled to Korea to guide the Seoul Ballet Company in the week leading up to the performance, stating in a press conference that "dance is about working with people and a means of communication." She emphasizes the uniqueness of each performer, indicating that the upcoming production will feature subtle changes tailored to the dancers, distinct from its original version. Eyal’s choreography employs the unique movement theory 'Gaga,' which encourages dancers to discover movement through their bodily sensations rather than adhering to strict techniques, a transformative approach that she has actively integrated since founding her dance company 'S-E-D' with her husband in 2013.

Born in Israel in 1971, Eyal’s journey as a choreographer began with her experience as a dancer in Ohad Naharin's company, where she developed her artistic identity. Describing herself not strictly as a choreographer but as a dreamer who shares her experiences through movement, she reiterates that dance is about freedom, connection, and emotion. From starting dance lessons at the age of four to creating her first piece at thirteen, Eyal embodies a life devoted to the exploration of movement and the embodied experience, reflecting her belief that each work is a continuation of life inspired by her surroundings.
