Data Giants Google and Meta Plan Massive Centers in Northern Finland – The Reason Lies in the Power Networks of Remote Areas
Google and Meta are planning to build significant data centers in Northern Finland which could foster a major data industry area in the region.
In Northern Finland, a noteworthy data center chain is emerging, significant enough to have international implications. Tech giants Google and Meta, along with smaller companies, are looking to establish separate centers that could form a data corridor extending from Kajaani to Ii. According to Antti Poikola, managing director of the Finnish Datacenter Association, if these initiatives come to fruition, it could lead to the formation of Finland's most important data industry area, with considerable relevance throughout Europe.
The planned data corridor closely tracks Fingrid's transmission network and electricity stations, which will provide the necessary power that these companies require to operate effectively. Google has already secured over 2,000 hectares of land across the municipalities of Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, emphasizing the serious intention of these tech giants to invest in the region. Local municipalities are not in competition but are collaborating, as stated by Minna Kärkkäinen, the mayor of Vaala, highlighting the cooperative approach to benefit the entire area, including Finland as a whole.
While Google has yet to finalize its investments in the three northern municipalities, Ii is particularly waiting for a decision from Meta regarding a data center proposal on nearly 500 hectares of land. The progress of these data center projects could significantly impact the local economy and employment, positioning Northern Finland as a key player in the European tech landscape.
