"Politico": Orban and Fico's veto will not work - the EU found a way to allocate 30 billion euros to Ukraine
The EU is preparing to negotiate with Hungary and Slovakia on a loan agreement for Ukraine amidst concerns over potential vetoes from their leaders.
Next week, EU leaders will convene in Brussels with the aim of persuading Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to adhere to their commitment to support a loan to Ukraine. This funding is crucial, as it constitutes two-thirds of the financial assistance Ukraine requires to defend against Russian aggression until the end of 2027, according to Politico. The situation is pressing, with a potential shortfall in financial support that could undermine Ukraine's defense efforts.
In light of possible opposition from Orban and Fico, the Baltic and Nordic countries have devised a Plan B to ensure that Ukraine receives sufficient funds to sustain its defense at least through the first half of this year. This initiative, according to two EU diplomats, revolves around a proposed sum of 30 billion euros, thereby highlighting the urgency and strategic importance of assisting Ukraine amid rising tensions in Eastern Europe.
The negotiations in Brussels underscore the broader implications of geopolitical alliances within the EU and the commitment of member states to support Ukraine against foreign aggression. The willingness of Baltic and Nordic countries to take the lead in securing funding reflects a growing concern about regional stability and the responsibility of EU nations to stand united against threats from Russia, which may continue to influence future diplomatic efforts within the bloc.
