Exhibition claiming 'Ainu are not indigenous people' troubles Sapporo city management
An upcoming exhibition in Sapporo that asserts the Ainu people are not indigenous has led to concerns and protests from the Ainu community.
An exhibition asserting the claim that the Ainu people are not indigenous will take place in the underground passageway at Sapporo Station, sparking controversy and protests among Ainu activists. This follows a similar exhibition held in September of last year, which drew significant criticism. A group of around 20 Ainu representatives recently protested at Sapporo City Hall, demanding the exhibition's cancellation, arguing that it promotes discrimination and undermines their historical identity. Sapporo City officials have expressed their struggles with the situation, noting that there have been efforts since the previous exhibition to share information and seek advice from legal and expert sources regarding the matter. However, officials indicated that they cannot reveal whether the exhibition can proceed due to regulations regarding events without the organizer's permission, leaving the community in a state of uncertainty and concern. Activists emphasized the need to respect the voices of the Ainu people and warned that allowing such an exhibition could contribute to the accumulation of discrimination in society. The discussions on this issue have not led to a resolution, highlighting the ongoing challenge of addressing Ainu rights and representation in Japan, especially in light of the legal acknowledgment given to the Ainu as a cultural minority since 2019.
