Development of 'AI Staff Ability' for Command Support to be Commissioned to Fujitsu by the Defense Equipment Agency

Fujitsu has received a commission from Japan's Defense Equipment Agency to develop an AI agent to assist decision-making for military commanders.

On October 10, Fujitsu announced that it has been commissioned by the Defense Equipment Agency to conduct research aimed at developing an AI agent that supports decision-making for Japan's Self-Defense Forces (SDF). The initiative seeks to enhance the capabilities of military personnel by accelerating decision-making processes and improving information gathering and analysis skills through the creation of what is termed 'AI staff ability'.

This AI agent will be capable of autonomously executing tasks necessary to achieve designated objectives, reflecting a trend in modern warfare towards utilizing artificial intelligence in command and control contexts. The research tasks also specify clear goals such as speeding up decision-making, ensuring a competitive edge in information gathering and analysis, and reducing the burden on personnel to enhance efficiency within Japan's military structures.

The development of multiple AI agents designed to consider various tactics and combat strategies indicates a significant shift in how military operations may be designed and executed in the future. By leveraging advanced AI technologies, the SDF aims to innovate its approach to combat operations, potentially reshaping the landscape of national defense.
