‘One Year of Stagnation’ Broadcasting Media Communication Review Committee Starts… Task of Processing 200,000 Backlogged Reviews
The Broadcasting Media Communication Review Committee, which has been stagnant for over a year, is set to commence its activities after finalizing its committee composition.
The Broadcasting Media Communication Review Committee (방미심위), which had been inactive for over a year, is poised to begin its functions following the completion of its committee assembly. On November 11, they issued a press release confirming that the first meeting would take place at 3 PM the following day, where the chairperson, vice-chair, and three standing committee members will be elected. The committee consists of nine members, appointed by the president and the National Assembly Speaker after consultations in the National Assembly.
At the inaugural meeting, the committee is expected to select its core leadership, including the chair and vice-chair. The chair position, classified under political public service, requires the nominee to go through a confirmation hearing by the National Assembly prior to the presidential appointment. The National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee (과방위) will hold a meeting soon to arrange the schedule for the confirmation hearing as well.
As the committee gears up for its first gathering, it has much to address, including creating an electoral review committee for the local elections scheduled after the formation of the 방미심위. Under the Public Official Election Act, the electoral broadcasting review should have commenced on February 3, the date candidates were allowed to register. Due to delays in the 방미심위’s establishment, the formation of this electoral reviewing body was postponed, and currently, there are over 200,000 pending review cases awaiting resolution by the committee.
