Large eviction in via Sammartini and Bovisa: 20 tents removed
A police operation in Milan led to the eviction of 41 people living in makeshift shelters in the area between via Sammartini and Parco Goccia.
In a significant police operation yesterday morning, the Local Police’s Territorial Problems Unit executed an eviction and cleanup in the area between via Sammartini, near Milan's Central Station, and Parco Goccia in Bovisa. This operation involved dismantling 20 makeshift structures made from sheets, wood, tarps, and recycled materials, affecting 41 individuals who were living in extreme marginalization. This action followed two preliminary inspections conducted by social services from Palazzo Marino, which assessed the situations of those involved in order to potentially activate support pathways, reception, or alternative housing solutions.
The affected area is part of the broader former industrial zone of Bovisa-Goccia, which has been a focal point for significant urban redevelopment projects for several years. Parco Goccia is one of the new green lungs proposed by Milan's urban planning document "Milano 2030," alongside initiatives intended to expand urban greenery in preparation for the 2026 Winter Olympics and beyond. This eviction is part of broader plans aimed at revitalizing this industrial area and addressing the needs of those affected by the changes.
While the eviction addresses the urban renewal objectives, it raises questions about the fate of the displaced individuals and the measures taken to support them. As urban development progresses in Milan, the challenge remains to balance growth and modernization with compassion towards the vulnerable populations, ensuring their voices are heard in the city’s redevelopment plan.
