Darwin told 'conserve water' amid dam crisis as consumption exceeds supply
Residents of Greater Darwin are urged to conserve water due to a crisis at the Darwin River Dam where consumption has exceeded supply after severe flooding.
Residents in the Greater Darwin area have been instructed to conserve water as the local supply from the Darwin River Dam is currently insufficient to meet demands. This crisis arose after unprecedented flooding damaged the dam's pump system, which is responsible for providing the majority of the area's water. As a result, the region has turned to bore water, and a boil water alert has been issued, emphasizing the urgent need for residents and businesses to reduce their water usage.
Infrastructure Minister Bill Yan visited the dam's pump station, where a team is working diligently to restore operations. A backup generator was successfully brought to the site to help with the pumping operations, and Yan reported that while progress is being made, water restrictions remain in effect. He emphasized the importance of continuing to boil water as the situation develops, indicating that significant repairs are still needed to restore the dam's full functionality.
Looking ahead, Yan noted that the next steps include repairing the access road to facilitate the delivery of additional backup generators. The dam typically operates with four pumping systems, and the Northern Territory government is committed to resolving the issues to ensure that water supply can stabilize soon. This incident highlights the vulnerabilities in infrastructure and the importance of proactive measures in managing natural disasters and water resources.
