Back to socialism? The legendary Ikarus is returning to Czechia, but you won't recognize the čabajka now

The Ikarus buses, once iconic in Czech streets, are experiencing a revival as modern electric variants are being reintroduced after a long absence.

In the past, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s, the articulated Ikarus buses were a familiar sight in many Czech cities, representing a significant aspect of public transport. However, with the decline of the traditional Hungarian manufacturer following the collapse of the communist regime, these buses gradually faded from public consciousness. After nearly a quarter of a century, Ikarus is making a comeback in Czechia, albeit in a modern electric configuration, highlighting a shift in public transportation technology and sustainability practices.

The journey of Ikarus since the fall of communism has been fraught with challenges, including its dismantling, various attempts at revival, multiple reorganizations, and disputes over the brand's legacy. Nevertheless, in recent years, Ikarus has established stability, particularly in the electric bus sector through a partnership with the Chinese firm CRRC. This collaboration has enabled Ikarus to focus on producing modern electric versions of their buses, which aligns with the growing trends towards sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation solutions.

As of late last year, the electric type 120e has commenced a testing phase in some Czech cities, aimed at assisting transport companies in evaluating the feasibility of operating electric buses. This return marks not just a revival of an old name but also reflects a significant evolution in public transport options available to the Czech populace, infusing elements of nostalgia while addressing contemporary environmental needs.
