A new initiative in Sweden is offering in-home healthcare services for children, particularly those with serious illnesses like cancer. The program, which has been in development since 2021 in Region Västerbotten, aims to alleviate the burden on families by bringing medical care directly to their homes. Starting in late 2024, care will be expanded to include more neighborhoods around Skellefteå, providing coverage for children living within a 30-minute radius of Norrlands university hospital in Umeå.

Karolina Örnberg, a pediatric nurse, emphasizes the importance of this new home healthcare team, stating that it significantly reduces the time and effort families would otherwise expend on hospital visits. Many of the families receiving care have children facing serious health challenges, and in-home services can help ease the everyday pressures they encounter. The home care team serves as a vital link between families and the healthcare system, ensuring that sick children can receive necessary treatment where they are most comfortable - at home.
