Lagos arrests 86 in clampdown on street begging

Eighty-six street beggars were arrested in a recent crackdown in Lagos State, alongside 12 suspected miscreants, as part of government efforts to tackle street begging and restore public order.

In Lagos State, a significant enforcement operation has led to the arrest of 86 street beggars as authorities continue their efforts to address the issue of street begging in public spaces. The operation primarily took place in the Agege and Ketu areas, where the Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources shared updates via social media. The operation is aimed at restoring order in these bustling neighborhoods which have seen an upsurge in street begging.

The operation was carried out by a patrol team that, according to Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab, first apprehended 25 individuals in Agege before moving to Ketu. Throughout the operation, 9 children and a further 12 suspected miscreants were also detained. These actions represent a broader framework of initiatives from the Lagos State government targeted at regulating public spaces and reintegrating individuals engaging in begging into community support systems.

Next steps involve profiling those arrested and referring them to appropriate government agencies, indicating that authorities do not just intend to punish but also to provide pathways for rehabilitation. This clampdown raises important discussions around the socio-economic factors that lead to begging and whether legal measures alone are sufficient to address the root causes of this issue.
