Firefighters search for men who disappeared in river and creek in Acre
Firefighters in the Juruá Valley are searching for two men who have gone missing in Acre's Juruá River and a nearby creek.
Firefighters from the Juruá Valley in Acre are currently engaged in search operations for two men who have vanished in the region. The first missing person is José Alencar do Nascimento, who reportedly fell into the Juruá River while returning home by canoe last Wednesday. Meanwhile, the second man, Francisco Sebestião Ferreira de Lima, went missing while hunting with his father last Sunday and is last known to have been in Porto Walter. As of Tuesday afternoon, both men remain unaccounted for, prompting ongoing efforts by local authorities to locate them.
Major Josadac Cavalcante, commander of the 4th Battalion of the Military Firefighters in Marechal Thaumaturgo, confirmed that the two cases are unrelated, despite the timing of their disappearances. José Alencar is from the Acuriá community and reportedly had been consuming alcohol before his retreat on the river, which adds complexity to the search operations. The circumstances surrounding both disappearances highlight the risks associated with outdoor activities in remote areas, especially under the influence of alcohol.
The ongoing search efforts not only reflect the immediate response to the missing persons but also raise broader concerns about safety in the region. Local communities in Acre often partake in activities like fishing or hunting, which typically involve navigating rivers and creeks. As these search operations continue, they indicate the challenges faced by rescue teams in densely forested and remote settings, emphasizing the need for awareness and caution for individuals engaging in such pursuits.
