Criminals open grave and set body on fire in RN; police investigate case

Criminals have desecrated the grave of a 21-year-old man in Brazil, igniting a police investigation into the act of corpse desecration.

In a shocking incident that occurred early on September 10, criminals opened the grave of a 21-year-old man, José Maciel da Silva Dantas, in the Community of Casqueira in the rural area of Areia Branca, Rio Grande do Norte, and set his body on fire. Dantas had died during a confrontation with the Military Police two days prior and was buried the day before this grave desecration. The act has been classified as vilipêndio de cadáver, or corpse desecration, which is a criminal offense under Brazilian law that punishes such actions with up to three years in prison and fines.
