The Nigerian Federal Government has initiated the evacuation of its citizens residing in Iran due to escalating tensions resulting from military actions in the region. This operation involves escorting willing Nigerians across the Armenian border to ensure their safety, as fears mount regarding potential wider conflicts in the Middle East. The evacuation effort follows military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, which began on February 28, prompting retaliatory actions that have heightened the precarious situation in the region.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, announced the start of this evacuation via a post on social media. She indicated that officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are actively coordinating efforts to ensure the safe movement of Nigerian nationals wishing to leave Iran. The oversight of the process is critical, especially in managing border crossings amid the present unrest, and the embassy's presence at key locations is aimed to facilitate a smooth and secure evacuation for those impacted by the ongoing crisis.

Dabiri-Erewa also provided reassurances that as of now, no Nigerians have been affected by the rising tensions, highlighting the proactive measures taken by the embassy to safeguard its citizens. The government's decision to evacuate its nationals underlines the seriousness of the situation and reflects a commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad, especially in regions experiencing political unrest and instability.
