A 33-year-old man was apprehended in Teresina, Brazil, on October 10, 2023, after being wanted for the sexual abuse of his 13-year-old cousin. This arrest comes after he had been on the run since September 2021, following a previous conviction in 2014 for a similar crime. The authorities, including the State Operations Directorate (DEOP) and the Federal Police of Piauí, carried out the arrest in the Vila da Glória area of South Teresina.

The crime taken place when the victim was living in the same household as the perpetrator and other family members, leading to a tragic violation of trust. Law enforcement has opted not to disclose the name of the convict to protect the identity of the victim, aligning with legal practices concerning the privacy of minors in sexual abuse cases. The sentence of 24 years was handed down back in 2014, indicating a long history of abuse, escalating to a point where the perpetrator found himself evading authorities.

Following his capture, the man was transferred to a correctional facility where he will serve his lengthy sentence. The case underscores the critical issue of child sexual abuse in Brazil, prompting local authorities to encourage the public to report any cases of abuse. They highlighted available resources, such as the Disque Direitos Humanos service, which allows individuals to report suspected cases of child and adolescent sexual abuse, further emphasizing community involvement in safeguarding the welfare of minors.
