Life imprisonment for 'FIFA thief' after embezzling one million euros
Jean Guy Blaise Mayoulas, former president of the Congolese Football Federation, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for embezzling over one million euros intended for Congolese football development.
A court in Brazzaville has sentenced Jean Guy Blaise Mayoulas, the former president of the Congolese Football Federation (Fecofoot), to life imprisonment for embezzling funds exceeding one million euros destined for the development of football in the Congo. The court found him guilty of misappropriating approximately 1.1 million euros (around 1.19 million dollars) allocated by FIFA to improve the sport in the Congo. The charges against him also included money laundering, forgery and the use of forged documents, and misappropriation of public funds.
This judgment comes in the wake of a financial scandal that is not the first to affect Fecofoot. In 2025, FIFA suspended the activities of the Congolese football federation due to government interference, which followed the Congolese government's decision to remove Mayoulas from his position in September 2024. The suspension had severe repercussions for the national team, which was forced to withdraw from two World Cup qualifying matches against Zambia and Tanzania, before the federation decided to lift the suspension under certain conditions.
The case highlights ongoing issues within Congolese football governance, particularly the financial mismanagement and corruption that have marred its reputation. As FIFA continues to impose sanctions against Fecofoot, it raises questions about the future of football in the Congo and the need for comprehensive reforms to restore integrity and effective management within the sport in the country.
