Glasgow Central station’s upper level to remain closed for rest of week after fire next door
Glasgow Central station's upper level will remain closed for the week due to a nearby fire that caused structural instability in an adjoining building.
Glasgow Central station's upper level, which serves trains to various destinations across the UK, will remain closed for the rest of the week following a fire that severely damaged a neighboring building. The fire, which occurred on Sunday, rendered the mid-Victorian block on the corner of Union Street and Gordon Street unstable, leading to a collapse of much of the structure. While the low-level part of the station used for local services will reopen on Wednesday, train operations on the upper concourse will be disrupted until further notice due to safety concerns.
Fortunately, there were no casualties reported during the incident. However, the fire resulted in extensive damage; almost the entire interior of the Gordon Street section was destroyed, leaving only the facade intact. This area housed various shops and office spaces, and as a result of the fire, many local business owners have suffered significant losses. In response, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched, successfully raising over £160,000 to assist those affected by the disaster, particularly those who lost all their stock and equipment.
The closure of the upper level of Glasgow Central station highlights the community's vulnerability to such disasters and emphasizes the importance of ongoing assessments by Network Rail to ensure safety. The impact of this fire extends beyond immediate physical damage, as it affects local businesses and commuter services, thus requiring a coordinated effort to restore normalcy in the area and to support the local economy in its recovery from this unfortunate event.
