Ogun mobile court fines 20 drivers for seatbelt, license violations
A mobile court in Ogun State has fined 20 drivers for various traffic violations, including not wearing seatbelts and lacking valid licenses.
In a recent mobile court session held by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at its Ogun State Sector Command in Abeokuta, 20 drivers were convicted for a range of traffic offences. The session, presided over by Chief Magistrate O.T. Odubanjo, was part of special enforcement operations aimed at improving road safety in the region. Of the 21 offenders brought before the court, only one was discharged, indicating a strict enforcement approach by the FRSC during this session.
The court proceedings revealed that a total of 65 traffic offences were recorded against the drivers during the operation. The violations included significant offences such as not wearing seatbelts, failing to have valid driver’s licenses, and overloading vehicles. The FRSC stated that while these offences could have severe implications for road safety, none of the convicted drivers were sentenced to imprisonment. This highlights a focus on fines as a deterrent rather than incarceration for violations that could potentially endanger public safety.
The enforcement operation comes at a time when road safety is a growing concern in Nigeria, with various campaigns and regulations being implemented to decrease traffic accidents. The FRSC's mobile court initiative is part of these efforts to ensure compliance with traffic laws, underscoring the organization’s commitment to maintaining safer roads. This enforcement action may serve as a warning to other drivers about the importance of abiding by traffic regulations to avoid penalties in the future.
