Airbnb says it will remove listings of popular apartments if notified by the São Paulo City Hall
Airbnb has announced it will remove listings of popular housing if notified formally by the São Paulo City Hall, following regulations that prohibit short-term rentals of social housing.
A representative from Airbnb stated that the platform will remove all listings for popular housing if formally notified by the São Paulo City Hall. This declaration was made during a Parliamentary Inquiry Commission meeting at the city council. The rental of social housing for short-term stays is prohibited in São Paulo, particularly after the publication of a decree in May which reinforced these regulations.
Carla Comarella, Head of Public Policies for Airbnb in Brazil, affirmed that the company is ready to collaborate with the city but emphasized that the responsibility of enforcement lies with public authorities. According to her, the timeframe for removing listings will depend on ongoing discussions between Airbnb and the city’s technical department. City council members have argued that the platform should proactively prevent such listings from appearing, rather than waiting for notifications.
This announcement sheds light on the ongoing tension between short-term rental platforms like Airbnb and local governments striving to regulate housing markets. In cities facing housing shortages, such regulations are seen as essential to protect residents' rights. The implications of these policies are significant, not only for the company but also for the future of affordable housing in the area and the tourism market in general.
