The mining company that achieved the first RIGI has started exporting lithium from Salta to China
Australian mining company Rio Tinto has begun its first lithium carbonate exports from its Rincón project in Salta, marking a significant step in Argentina's lithium market.
Australian mining company Rio Tinto has successfully completed its first export of lithium carbonate from its Rincón project located in the northwest region of Salta, Argentina. This development is significant as it marks the formal initiation of exports from this operational site, which solidifies Argentina's position as a strategic hub within the company's lithium portfolio in South America. The announcement indicates Rio Tinto's commitment to expanding its lithium production capabilities in the region.
Rio Tinto now stands out as the only active lithium carbonate producer in Argentina that is making exports from all three provinces of Northwest Argentina (NOA), which include Catamarca, Jujuy, and now Salta. The first shipment from the Rincón project consisted of 200 tons of lithium carbonate, distributed across ten containers, which were dispatched from the Port of Buenos Aires to Shanghai, China. This external market presence highlights the importance of Argentina in the global supply chain of lithium, a critical component for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy solutions.
Since its production commenced in May of last year, the Rincón project has been gradually increasing its output capacity. This initial export not only underscores Rio Tinto's strategic operations in the region but also reinforces Argentina's growing role in the international lithium market, particularly as the demand for clean energy technologies surges. As more projects come online, the country is likely to attract further investments and cement its status as a key player in the lithium industry.
