Toviggino appears in court this Wednesday to be questioned about the improper withholding of AFA contributions

Pablo Toviggino, treasurer of the Argentine Football Association, is set to appear in court to face questioning regarding the improper withholding of tax contributions totaling 19.3 billion pesos.

Pablo Toviggino, the treasurer of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), is scheduled to appear in court this Wednesday to be questioned in relation to a judicial case regarding the improper retention of 19.3 billion pesos in taxes and pension contributions by the AFA during 2024 and 2025. Judicial sources informed Clarin that Toviggino has been summoned by Judge Diego Amarante of the Economic Criminal Court at 11 AM, prior to the questioning of AFA president Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia, which is set for Thursday and will conclude the hearings.

Previously, three other officials have already been questioned; these include Gustavo Lorenzo, the general manager of the AFA, as well as former and current general secretaries of the organization, VΓctor Blanco and Cristina Malaspina. All three officials submitted written statements and chose not to answer questions during their hearings. The situation remains tense as observers now await to see whether Toviggino and his lawyer Marcelo Rocchetti will follow a similar approach during his own questioning, particularly regarding the severe implications of the case.

This case highlights significant issues within financial governance in Argentine football, as the AFA faces scrutiny over its handling of public funds and contributions. The ongoing investigations are likely to have wider ramifications for the organization and its officials, as well as raise questions about fiscal accountability in similar institutions within the region.
