After LPG, air travel has also become expensive, Air India has increased the fuel surcharge on tickets
Due to rising fuel prices influenced by tensions in West Asia, Air India has announced an increase in fuel surcharges on both domestic and international flight tickets.
In response to escalating tensions in West Asia due to the conflict in Iran, India has seen an increase in transportation costs, specifically in air travel after a prior increase in cooking gas prices. Air India and Air India Express have decided to raise the fuel surcharge on flight tickets as a countermeasure to rising fuel costs. The airline stated that this increase would be implemented in phases and affect both domestic and international flights.
According to Air India's announcement, the fuel surcharge increase will occur in two phases. For domestic routes within India and flights to SAARC countries, the ticket prices will rise by approximately 399 INR. Furthermore, flights to West Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa will see fuel surcharges rise by 10, 20, and 30 dollars respectively. This adjustment comes as a necessity following a sudden spike in aviation fuel prices, with significant increases noted since early March 2026.
This move by Air India underscores the broader impact of geopolitics on local economies and transportation costs. As fuel prices continue to rise, travelers should expect further adjustments in flight pricing, and this may also lead to reduced travel demand domestically and internationally. The implications of such increases could affect the future of air travel in India, potentially making it less accessible for the average consumer in the coming months, amid ongoing international tensions that influence oil prices.
