"Young people having fun": a mayor from Gironde denounces a deliberate act following the fire at a supermarket

A mayor from Gironde has condemned what appears to be a deliberate act following the destruction of a Carrefour Market supermarket by fire.

On Sunday evening, a significant fire broke out and completely destroyed a Carrefour Market supermarket in the center of Hourtin, Gironde, around 8:30 PM. The building, which was relatively new, measured 3,000 square meters and was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, but the estimated damages are around 7 million euros.

The local authorities have opened an investigation into the incident and are leaning towards the possibility that the fire was set intentionally. Mayor of Hourtin has voiced his concerns about the act, labeling it as one perpetrated by 'young people having fun,' reflecting a growing concern over youth behavior and public safety in the area. This incident highlights the ongoing issues of vandalism and safety that some French towns are grappling with.

Firefighters, numbering 28, were deployed to control the blaze and managed to prevent its spread to nearby homes and businesses. Despite their significant efforts, the scale of the damage poses challenging implications for the community, both economically and socially, as the supermarket served as a vital resource for local residents. The community is now left to confront the aftermath of this incident, considering both the potential for a lapse in public safety and the financial repercussions of losing a local supermarket.
