Beatrice Venezi, the green light from La Fenice: she will lead the orchestra of the Gran Teatro for four years starting in October

Beatrice Venezi has been officially appointed as the conductor of the Gran Teatro La Fenice's orchestra for a four-year term starting this October.

Beatrice Venezi has been appointed the musical director of the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice, with her term set to begin in October 2023. This decision was approved by the board of the lyric-symphonic foundation, as confirmed by Venice's mayor, Luigi Brugnaro. The formal announcement emphasizes the endorsement of Venezi’s expertise and the support of the superintendent, Nicola Colabianchi.

However, her appointment has sparked significant dissent among the theatre's staff, particularly the orchestra members. Following her designation by the superintendent on September 22, employees have staged protests, including rallies, distributing flyers, and even strikes. Union representatives have stated that the protests are primarily aimed at addressing job security and working conditions for the workers of La Fenice.

This situation has drawn attention not only to Venezi’s achievement as a prominent figure in classical music but also to the underlying labor tensions within one of Italy's most prestigious opera houses. As the orchestra enters a new era under Venezi’s leadership, the initial challenges reflect broader issues within the performing arts sector, where the balance between artistic vision and worker rights remains a critical discussion point.
