Couple arrested for sexual abuse of a vulnerable person 16 years after the crime, in Paraíba

A couple was arrested in Brazil for the sexual abuse of a mentally vulnerable teenager, 16 years after the alleged crime took place.

In a significant case of delayed justice, a couple was arrested in the city of Picuí, Paraíba, for the sexual abuse of a vulnerable teenager, a crime that allegedly took place 16 years ago. The Police Civil reported that the victim, who was the daughter of the woman arrested, suffered sexual abuse from her stepfather when she was just 15 years old. The abuses occurred in 2010 in the municipality of Alagoa Nova, where the victim was noted to have a mental disorder that contributed to her vulnerability. As a result of the abuse, the victim became pregnant. Investigations into the case were sparked in February of this year after the Tutelar Council received information regarding the victim's situation and subsequently alerted the authorities. The couple had been evading the police since the start of the investigations, hiding in the region of Picuí. After a thorough investigation by the Paraíba Civil Police, they were eventually identified and captured, highlighting issues of accountability and the long-lasting impact of such crimes on victims, as well as the challenges law enforcement faces in bringing perpetrators to justice even years after the incidents occur.
