Meta buys Moltbook, the social network only for robots that went viral on the internet
Meta has acquired the social network Moltbook, which is exclusively for robots, according to a report from Axios.
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, has announced its acquisition of Moltbook, an innovative social network designed solely for robots. The purchase, reported by Axios on Tuesday, October 10, reveals the burgeoning interest in platforms that facilitate interaction among AI agents, although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Moltbook gained significant attention in Silicon Valley earlier this year, described as a Reddit-like space for robots to create posts and comment on one another’s activities, with human users allowed only to observe.
The Moltbook platform initially boasted around 1.5 million AI agents registered; however, this number was significantly reduced to 194,000 after a verification process was implemented. This reduction raises questions about the engagement and authenticity of the platform’s user base, suggesting Meta may need to address these challenges as it integrates Moltbook into its broader ecosystem. The acquisition underscores the rising significance of AI-driven platforms in social media, as Meta seeks to expand its influence in the evolving tech landscape.
In conjunction with the acquisition, the creators of Moltbook, entrepreneur Matt Schlicht and journalist Ben Parr, will join Meta's superintelligence team, which is known for its high-profile hiring practices often resulting in deals worth hundreds of millions to billions of dollars. This strategic move aims to bolster Meta's endeavors in artificial intelligence, positioning the company at the forefront of social networking for AI agents and potentially redefining how technology interfaces with machine intelligence in social settings.
