PGR requests Supreme Court to convict PL deputies for embezzlement of parliamentary amendments
The PGR has urged Brazil's Supreme Court to convict three deputies from the PL party for corruption linked to the embezzlement of parliamentary amendments.
The Attorney General's Office of Brazil (PGR) has called for the conviction of three deputies from the PL (Liberal Party) due to allegations of passive corruption and organized crime concerning parliamentary amendments. This request was presented to the First Panel of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) on the morning of October 10, during a session where the court deliberated on the case involving deputies Josimar Maranhãozinho and Pastor Gil, along with the alternate deputy Bosco Costa, who are facing charges related to the matter.
The prosecution claims that the group attempted to extort the city government of São José do Ribamar, insisting that 25% of the funds allocated to the municipality—one of the most populous in Maranhão—be returned to the lawmakers. Sub-Prosecutor Paulo Jacobina indicated that if convicted, the evidence collected during the investigation confirms that the accused formed a criminal organization to facilitate the misallocation of parliamentary amendments in exchange for bribes.
This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding political corruption in Brazil, particularly related to the use of parliamentary amendments as tools for illicit gain. The outcome of this trial could further influence public trust in Brazilian political institutions and set a significant precedent for dealing with corruption within legislative bodies, as well as mitigate the challenges posed by organized crime within the political sphere.
