VIDEO: Reservoir breaks after heavy rains in municipality of RN

A water reservoir named Açude de Zé Pereira in Cruzeta, Brazil, broke after heavy rainfall, although no damage or risk to nearby facilities was reported.

On the morning of Monday, September 9, a water reservoir known as Açude de Zé Pereira broke in the rural area of Cruzeta, located in the Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The rupture followed significant rains over the weekend, with approximately 200 millimeters of precipitation causing the reservoir to overflow and ultimately fail. Fortunately, the local Civil Defense agency visited the site and found no immediate damage or risk to another nearby reservoir that was affected by the incoming water.

The municipality of Cruzeta confirmed that both the damaged reservoir and the nearby one are privately owned. The incident highlights the vulnerabilities of water management systems in the region, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall that overwhelm existing infrastructure. The town also indicated that the reservoir had been completely empty just prior to the rainfall, demonstrating how quickly conditions can change in the area.

In response to the rupture, the local government announced that recovery services for the Açude de Zé Pereira will begin the following week. This proactive approach aims to restore the functionality of the reservoir and ensure that similar incidents are less likely in the future, showing an effort by local authorities to manage water resources effectively in light of the region's climatic challenges.
