European Union and FGV promote event on disinformation in the era of AI
The European Union and FGV Comunicação are hosting an international conference in Brasília focused on disinformation and foreign interference in the context of artificial intelligence.
The European Union and FGV Comunicação are set to hold the international conference "Disinformation, Sovereignty, and Democracy in the Era of Artificial Intelligence" on March 17 in Brasília, marking a significant event dedicated to the discussion of foreign interference and manipulation of information. This conference aims to tackle the increasing issue of disinformation campaigns, especially those identified by the EU's Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) framework. With the accelerating development of generative artificial intelligence, this topic is becoming increasingly relevant and pressing.
A report from the European External Action Service has highlighted 505 cases of such information manipulation incidents in 2024 alone, involving approximately 38,000 digital channels that affected 90 different countries. Notably, electoral processes have been recognized as primary targets for these operations, underscoring the urgency of addressing these manipulations to protect democratic institutions and public discourse.
The conference will feature prominent speakers, including the EU ambassador to Brazil, Marian Schuegraf, and regional director of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), Marcela Ríos Tobar. Their participation emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in combating disinformation and securing democratic processes, especially as new technologies continue to evolve and pose challenges to informed citizen engagement and decision-making in democracies worldwide.
