In the discussion – recipes on how the Lithuanian language can unite: tips for foreigners
Education experts and politicians shared advice on making the Lithuanian language a unifying element in society, encouraging foreigners to speak it.
A recent discussion organized as part of the 'Lithuanian Month' initiative by the Lrytas portal focused on how to unite society through the Lithuanian language. Experts in education and political figures provided insights on making the Lithuanian language more welcoming and accessible, especially for non-native speakers. Through the message "Your accent is a compliment to us," the initiative aims to encourage a positive view of language learning and the diverse accents that may accompany it.
The event, running from February 16 to March 11, highlights personal stories of individuals who have chosen to live and create in Lithuania, emphasizing the importance of embracing and learning the Lithuanian language. Among the speakers was Cedric Raffier, a Frenchman who has lived in Lithuania for 18 years, sharing his experiences as a volunteer and how he learned the language, showcasing the benefits of integration and cultural exchange.
In support of this initiative, the Vilnius municipality has announced the action plan "Daring Lithuanian," which aims to bolster the Lithuanian language knowledge among its foreign residents. The plan encourages locals to adopt a more forgiving approach towards foreigners trying to learn Lithuanian and to assist them in their integration into society. This reflects a growing acknowledgment of Lithuania's multicultural society and the need for inclusivity in language learning and integration efforts.
