China's exports grow 21% this year after record in 2025
China's exports have significantly exceeded expectations, growing by 21.8% in the early months of 2026, driven primarily by demand for electronics, amidst forecasts of topping last year's record trade surplus.
China's export figures for the beginning of 2026 have vastly surpassed initial expectations, showing a remarkable growth of 21.8% during the first two months compared to a modest increase of 6.6% in December 2025. This surge is attributed largely to robust demand for electronic products, particularly integrated circuits and technology, as the nation capitalizes on a boom in artificial intelligence investment. Economists, like Xu Tianchen from the Economist Intelligence Unit, have noted that not only were electronics a significant contributor, but there has also been an unexpected strength in exports of clothing, textiles, and handbags, despite previous weak performance in the sectors last year due to challenges faced in Southeast and South Asia.
