Fire underneath Saskatoon’s University Bridge causes damage to sewer line
A fire under Saskatoon’s University Bridge has damaged a section of a sanitary sewer line, marking the second consecutive year of similar incidents despite preventative measures.
A fire erupted underneath the Spadina side of Saskatoon's University Bridge, damaging a portion of the city's sanitary sewer line. This marks the second consecutive year that such a fire has occurred at this location, raising concerns about safety and infrastructure maintenance. City officials, including Brendan Lemke, the director of water and waste operations, stated that measures were implemented last year, including fencing and barbed wire, to deter public access to the area, yet these proved ineffective against the determination of individuals.
The incident, although serious, appears to be less damaging than the significant fire in 2025, which resulted in severe disruptions, including the temporary closure of the bridge and substantial sewage spillage into the South Saskatchewan River. Current evaluations suggest that the damage this time may be more manageable, with an optimistic timeline of about a week to complete necessary repairs. Officials are hopeful that a straightforward fix will restore normal conditions under the bridge quickly, mitigating further sewage and environmental impact.
With ongoing issues at this site, there may be a need for reassessing the security and maintenance protocols in place to ensure pipeline integrity and public safety. The recurring nature of such incidents highlights vulnerabilities within the urban infrastructure, necessitating the city to explore more effective preventive measures to protect crucial sewer lines and mitigate environmental risks associated with future fire incidents.
