Evangelos Meimarakis, a Greek MEP and former president of the New Democracy party, has sent an urgent letter to the European Parliament's Security and Defence Committee (SEDE), requesting the organization of an official mission to Cyprus. He emphasizes that recent developments in the Middle East and the broader geopolitical situation in the Eastern Mediterranean necessitate close monitoring by the European Parliament of the evolving circumstances in the Republic of Cyprus.

In his letter addressed to SEDE Chair Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Meimarakis highlights that Cyprus, as an EU member state situated in a geopolitically critical region, is directly affected by events in the Middle East. He argues that the situation requires immediate attention from the European Parliament to ensure the safety and security of the island amid regional uncertainties.

As part of an extraordinary meeting proposal, Meimarakis calls for the committee members to conduct an on-site investigation into security issues in Cyprus. This initiative aims to foster a deeper understanding of the implications of the current geopolitical climate for the island, thereby enabling the European Union to better address potential risks and prepare appropriate responses to any threats facing Cyprus and its security interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
