Suspect for arms smuggling on behalf of Hamas arrested in Cyprus

A suspect, Kamel M., wanted for arms smuggling for Hamas, was arrested in Cyprus after arriving from Lebanon.

The German Federal Prosecutor's Office announced the arrest of Kamel M., a Berlin resident originally from Lebanon, by Cypriot authorities at Larnaca Airport while he was arriving from Lebanon. There was an outstanding European arrest warrant against him, and following his arrest, a search was conducted at his apartment in Berlin on Sunday. The prosecution details that Kamel M. allegedly organized the transfer of 300 cartridges in August 2025, which were then passed on to associates, one of whom, Mohamed S., was arrested last January as part of the same investigation.

According to the first channel of German public television ARD, authorities believe the firearms being gathered were intended for 'murderous attacks on Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany and Europe.' This highlights an alarming trend regarding the intent behind such smuggling activities, indicating a connection between international arms trafficking and planned terror attacks. The situation raises significant security concerns not only for Germany but for Europe as a whole.

Kamel M. is set to be extradited from Cyprus to Germany, where he will face charges related to his alleged involvement with Hamas and the arms smuggling operations. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges that various countries face in combatting terrorism and organized crime on a global scale, as well as the importance of international cooperation in addressing these threats effectively.
