The United States has decided to extend the operational life of the International Space Station (ISS) from its previously planned retirement at the end of 2030 until September 30, 2032. This decision comes under a new bill that was approved by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation on March 4, 2026. The primary motivation for this extension is to avoid any gaps in human presence in low Earth orbit, especially ahead of the expected launch of new commercial space stations.
