New Rule for Ola, Uber in UP, Registration Required to Operate Cabs

The Uttar Pradesh government has mandated that taxi aggregator companies like Ola and Uber must register before they can operate, as part of a new initiative aimed at enhancing passenger safety and convenience.

In a significant move aimed at improving passenger safety and operational standards, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to enforce mandatory registration for taxi aggregator companies such as Ola and Uber. This decision was announced after a cabinet meeting led by Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh, who emphasized that the new regulations are a proactive measure to ensure the security and convenience of passengers using these services. Without registration, no cab services will be allowed to operate in the state.

The new rule aligns with the amendments made to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, by the central government, which are set to come into effect on July 1, 2025. Under these amendments, not only will taxi aggregator companies be required to register, but they will also need to obtain fitness certificates, ensure drivers pass medical tests, and undergo police verification. Minister Singh noted that prior to this, there was no clear regulatory control over these companies, which often led to safety concerns and unregulated practices in the industry.

With these developments, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to create a more structured and accountable framework for taxi services within the state. The requirement for licenses and compliance with specific regulations is expected to enhance the overall quality and safety of cab services. As the government prepares to implement these regulations, it reflects a growing trend across India to regularize app-based taxi services and assure the public of their safe usage in urban areas.
