Father Acquitted in Death of 7-Month-Old Son, Utsunomiya District Court Declares 'No Evidence of Crime'

A father was acquitted of causing the death of his 7-month-old son by the Utsunomiya District Court, which found insufficient evidence to prove wrongdoing.

The Utsunomiya District Court ruled on October 10th that a 27-year-old father, accused of causing the death of his 7-month-old son through assault, was not guilty, with the presiding judge stating that there was 'no evidence of a crime.' The father had been arrested in May 2020 after his son was reported to have died from head injuries. Initially treated for the incident, he was released without charges, but was formally indicted in August 2023. The court found that while the child had died from diffuse axonal injury, the defense argued that the death resulted from epilepsy-related causes instead.
