Meeting with a Doctor from Ukraine Serving in Iceland
The CEO of Landspítali, Runólfur Pálsson, is set to meet with Ukrainian doctor Daria Peremot, who is struggling to gain employment in Iceland despite qualifying as a physician.
Runólfur Pálsson, the CEO of Landspítali, Iceland's national university hospital, plans to meet with Daria Peremot, an ENT specialist from Ukraine. Peremot has been serving at the Landnámssetrið in Borgarnes but faces difficulties in securing a position in the health sector in Iceland. Despite completing her studies and passing the final exam at the University of Iceland, her credentials are not recognized for direct employment.
To practice medicine in Iceland, Peremot needs to work under supervision for six months, but she has struggled to find such opportunities, having received only one interview despite applying broadly across the country. The system requires foreign doctors to navigate complex requirements to demonstrate their skills in the local context, which has posed significant barriers for her career prospects in Iceland.
Pálsson noted the importance of looking into Peremot's situation after seeing her interview with a media outlet, emphasizing that addressing the challenges faced by qualified doctors in obtaining work in Iceland can impact healthcare delivery and integration of skilled professionals into the workforce. This meeting may lead to discussions on reforms in the recognition of foreign qualifications and smoother pathways for immigrant health professionals to contribute in Iceland's healthcare system.
