Figures for 2025: More Drownings in Bavaria

In 2025, the number of drownings in Bavaria rose significantly, with 84 fatalities reported compared to 70 the previous year.

In Bavaria, Germany, the Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) reported a troubling increase in drowning fatalities for the year 2025, with 84 people losing their lives, a substantial rise from 70 in 2024. The report highlights that most of the victims were male, and notably, a concerning trend emerged concerning children and adolescents, with an increase in drowning incidents in these age groups.

Among the fatalities, six were children under the age of ten, and eight were individuals under twenty years old, a stark contrast to the previous year, where only one drowning was reported in each of these categories. The highest number of drownings occurred among older adults, particularly those aged between 71-80, totaling 16 victims. When considering all individuals over the age of 60, the death toll rises to 37, indicating a need for focused prevention strategies in vulnerable age demographics.

This alarming rise in drownings has prompted discussions about water safety, particularly in swimming pools and natural waterways, as well as the need for enhanced education and awareness campaigns aimed at both young and elderly populations. The report serves as a wakeup call for communities to reassess their water safety measures and implement proactive solutions to ensure the safety of residents during the summer months and beyond.
